The son of a
wealthy
businessman,
Stanislavsky was
an amateur actor
before setting up
a progressive
popular theatre
company, the
Society of Art and
Literature, which
evolved into the
Moscow Arts
Theater
#
Stanislavsky (center) set up the Moscow Arts Theater with the great
actor/producer Vladimir Nemirov-Danchenko (far left). The theater
became famous for Stanislavsky's productions of the plays of
Chekhov (center, reading), many of which were premiered there
#
Stanislavsky's
guide to the
Method, An Actor
Prepares, became
required reading
for the profession
in Europe, but
even more so in
America where,
after the war, his
teachings were
adopted by the
Actors Studio and
began to have
an influence
on Hollywood
#
It was Marlon
Brando's "T-shirt
and mumbles"
performance in A
Streetcar Named
Desire in 1949
which brought
the Method to
prominence and
prompted a
debate on the
quality of
Stanislavsky's
theatrical legacy
